As You See It, So It Is...
Visualization is a powerful tool, and one that is commonly utilized by top athletes, performers, and entrepreneurs.
Athletes will envision a successful game beforehand, a power-lifter will visualize themselves successfully lifting a weight, business owners will visualize their business as they intend it to look at its most successful and their subsequent lifestyle and social impact.
At this point there has been more than enough research done on the subject demonstrating its potential for positive impact on success to give these concepts validity. Some of the information has made its way to mainstream light relatively recently, such as the well known video "The Secret" which introduces the basic application of these concepts in a very general and simplistic manner.
What you want to do is set aside the time - ideally in the beginning of each day during or after your meditations if you have set up such a routine - to imagine what your big picture goal will look and feel like.
To get you started, I’ll walk through a powerful visualization technique you can utilize daily.
First, find a comfortable position, close your eyes, and begin to focus inward. A great way to start is with the void meditation to clear your head of any distracting thoughts.
When you are ready and have your mind clear, focus on your breath. Focus on the breath as it enters and leaves the body, in and out. Follow your breath to stillness.
Now, imagine yourself walking down a path. You are not in a hurry, but you see a set of stairs off to the right in the distance. You walk to the stairs, look down and see that there are ten steps. You begin to slowly walk down, taking one step down with each exhale. When you reach the bottom you see a doorway. This is the door to your dream, whether it is your dream business, home, or a gym with you with your ideal body, or whatever type of space would be a conduit to achieving your goal. Take another breath and step through the door.
As you walk in, you may see everything in great detail, or it may be fuzzy, with little detail. While you are in here, it is your job to see yourself in your goals as you want them to be after you have accomplished them, and make your space reflect exactly as you want it to look as if you had already built it.
Visualize it in its entirety. Mentally construct every detail. If it is a business, imagine the building, the floor, the light fixtures, the people/employees inside, the smells, the noise - every detail you can think of, exactly as you want it. Imagine what you would be doing within the business, and the feeling you would have while doing it.
If it is a fitness goal, imagine what you would look like, feel the strength of your muscles, feel yourself completely healthy, see yourself crossing the finish line of the marathon or triathlon you want to complete, feel your breathlessness and fatigue after the event, and the feeling of accomplishment and success for completing or winning the event.
Possibly the most important element here is to create the feeling you would have if the goal had already been achieved. The more vividly you can picture your goal as though it had already happened, the better you will be able to make the emotional connection which is the key to bringing it to fruition. Having the emotional connection helps to anchor it from imagination to reality – as you see it, so it is.
I encourage you to do this daily. The more you practice this, the more vividly you will be able to picture your goals, and as they feel more real to you, the more motivated you will be to achieve them.
